There’s no path through the fire

late evening
at the supermarket
waiting in line to pay
a man joins behind me

wearing large square glasses
with pendulous mustaches
all sort of retro
a flashback to the 70s style
a Bolognese rain jacket
running pants and a bouffant

he says:
don’t you worry about a thing
I won’t jump the line in front of you
because I have a love
for sense of order
which is why many of my friends are maimed
and many have lost their lives

because
when we go out for a walk in the Topareva Recreation Area
the street toughs from the local neighborhoods jump us
they reach for their knives and brass knuckles
I have a pocket rocket
but first I want to

make sure everything is done in the right order

I say:
what are you doing – it’s against the law
in the meantime they’re already slaughtering
my pals
and I first
as is customary
fire a warning shot in the air
and only then fire at them

after all I am a professional sniper
I have a rifle with optical scope
and a laser beam sight
I shoot only in the shoulder and knee
after all I’m also a doctor
I know
where it’s safe to aim
so that my target lives
and I never kill anyone

then the cops
of course I’ve got all the cops in my pocket
so I’ll just have to give them a little extra something

they tell me: we understand
shoot if you have to
just don’t kill anyone
so I never kill anyone

though it’s a tricky matter
and I aim deliberately carefully
but the delinquents
just keep
cutting my friends’ throats

so it turns out that
I’m not allowed to kill
but it’s alright to kill us?

then he goes silent
and I drop my bag of vegetables
quickly round up my belongings
and hightail it for home

I look back – and he’s chasing after me
but doesn’t quite manage to catch up
(he’s a cripple to boot)

and then he
stops and yells in my wake:

hey you remember this
remember this

there’s no path
through the fire

Nozhakin watering the flowers

Igor’ Nozhakin
was once a working man
handy with nitrox and helium both

did jobs at substantial depths
never a day without his diving suit
now rides around his plot in a golf cart
constantly embracing his garden hose

painting trunks of apple trees and rare decorative evergreens

yes – he thinks to himself
there are no miracles

and attentively spraying
riding, stopping, getting out, spraying

recalls the cruises on ships
the wet suntanned women
swimming in Euros or rubles

he dives deep into his memories
into that which for him was always most important

pouring himself a half a glass of vodka
he sighs:
Igor’, Igor’
those were the dames

the wind would tear off their white
and pink t-shirts from the yacht’s handrails

water drops glistening on his biceps

those refined beauties
examining with interest the tats

and of course all the rest

then diving into the water – vale of peace
depths below forty meters
in twilight
hair scattering
floating about

the air in the tanks flooding your lungs roils them
you flying like a whale
and they tell you
later: Igor’ you are one smooth and beautiful whale

but the ladies no longer come to him in dreams
instead some sort of immature visions flutter

there he simply swims as a seal

across the white sandy-hilled bottom
his elegant shadow scampers

together with his friends the fish
cuts with his back the white crest of the wave

a huge grouper approaches
and huddles next to him with its flank
eyes him askance
and expels mirror-like bubbles

that’s when in a hypnagogic state
for a minute it seems
that everything is ok with the world

everything as it were relaxes
and unwinds
within
