When I started this job, I had no idea what to expect.
I recorded the first three interviews on an old analogue tape recorder I dug out of my closet. I finally splurged at the KMart on 3rd Street and bought a digital recorder - which I'm constantly paranoid of erasing post-interview. It's a no-frills gig, but it's fun.
I’ve tried to bring an eclectic mix to these pages: the historical cabaret of Laural Meade, the colorful piercing poetry of Ruth Margraff, the stinging, singing satire of Bill Robens, the epic whimsy of Jacqueline Wright, the stark absurdity of Michael Kell, the raw theatricality of Ken Roht, the tart, lacerating wit of Fielding Edlow, and the time-altering madness of Phinneas Kiyomura. And there’s my own play, Shake (for those of you who live in Los Angeles, it runs through early September at the Theater of NOTE ), which I will leave you to define for yourself.
One special mention: the recent production of Erik Patterson's Sick by Playwrights Arena at LATC occupies a space in my brain which I periodically reference as a guide to creating great theater. I hope that posting it on Connotation Press encourages someone out there to put it up again.
But then, all of these plays deserve to be staged again.
And thank you for reading!
Looking forward to the next one,
Joshua Fardon
